A low vision assessment is not just about magnifiers.  Our Low Vision Opticians might discuss referrals to a number of different agencies with you.

Below are a few of these and what they might be able to offer.

  • Age Cymru – the national charity for older people in Wales
  • Care & Repair – Care & Repair Cymru leads and supports 13 Care & Repair Agencies across Wales who deliver direct help to vulnerable older people, helping them to live in suitable homes. Their vision is a Wales where all older people can live independently in warm, safe and accessible homes.
  • Sight Cymru – Sight Cymru is an independent Welsh charity, formerly known as Sight Support, that was established in 1865. They pride themselves on being the only entirely Welsh sight loss agency that provides services throughout Wales.
  • Sight Life – Sight Life (formerly Cardiff Institute for the Blind) provides a range of services across South Wales with the aim of ensuring blind and partially sighted people can enjoy an independent, active, and fulfilling social life.
  • Guide Dogs CymruWhen someone loses their sight, Guide Dogs Cymru is here to make sure they don’t lose their freedom as well. Our team provides life-changing mobility services to adults, children and young people with sight loss throughout Wales.
  • RNIBRNIB Cymru is Wales’ largest sight loss organisation. We provide a wide range of services and support to blind and partially sighted people across Wales, as well as campaigning for service improvements and to prevent avoidable sight loss.
  • Macular Society – We’re here for everyone with a macular condition. Our vision is to end macular disease
  • Rehabilitation Officer for the Vision Impaired (ROVI) – specialist professionals who are trained to support visually impaired people, enabling and empowering them to lead independent and fulfilling lives. … Much of this work would take place in the visually impaired person’s home.
  • Frailty & Falls Team – A specialist service aimed at reducing falls. This can help keep you independent, and reduce injury, as well as save the NHS money.

This is not an extensive list and referral to these agencies might not be appropriate for all.

If our low vision optician feels that one or more of these agencies might be helpful for you, they will discuss them with you, and if your happy, and agree, will refer you.
